« Facebook: The Leaky Faucet of Time »

We all know about the addictive nature of Facebook.  Nothing good on TV?  Meh, let’s just check out Facebook to see what’s going on.  While you’re at it, you might as well become a fan of my page here!  People have even coined the expression, “Facebook stalking,” to describe the secretive viewing of people’s public information posted in the “interwebs” of the site.  It’s like watching Lost or any other series, you just can’t wait to see what happens in the next chapter of someone else’s life.

If all of this personal experience wasn’t already enough evidence of just how much time one can spend on Facebook, between all the information and apps (Farmville anyone?), usage trends indicate that time spent on Facebook is INCREASING.  Nile Flores even highlights Why Social Media Could Be For Everyone.

We’re spending more and more time spying on people, playing games, checking out organizations, and other random musings within the Facebook world.  According to Mashable, time spent on Facebook jumped by 50% from 4 hours and 39 minutes back in June of 2009 to over 7 hours in January of 2010.  Now if only the iPhone battery could make that jump, then we’d be set.

What’s even more interesting is that Facebook usage time trumps that of Google, YouTube, Wikipedia, Amazon, Yahoo, and Microsoft put together!  That is simply amazing.  I mean, if anything, I would think you could sit down and spend more time watching entertaining videos on Youtube than reading through random gibberish on Facebook.

Is 7 hours per month too much?  How much is too much time spent on Facebook?  It seems that the trend is for increased time spent.  Can Facebook replace television as family entertainment?

What do you think?

Unbelievable! People spend so much time on Facebook?! And stalk other people?! But I don't think it can replace TV. Or can it? Surely 7 hours per month is not too much.

Indeed! Perhaps it cannot replace the TV, but it's certainly a lot of time considering. I'm interested to see what other ways Facebook can come up with to capture more of people's time. We shall see...
