We have all experienced moments when we are out somewhere and become paralyzed by the sight of a stunning individual.  The person projects confidence and authority.  He or she doesn’t even have to be the best looking person in the vicinity, yet still catches people’s attention.  Suddenly, everyone is catering to this person and wants to find out what the buzz is all about.

Let’s take a look at some of the factors at play here and how you can be someone who projects confidence.

Dress the part

It is important for you to coordinate what you wear.  Everything including your top, pants, jewelry, watch, belt, shoes and even underwear conveys a certain message.  One of the first things people notice about others is what the person is wearing.  Now I know a lot of the men out there are grumbling and thinking to themselves how only women need to worry about these kinds of things, but in fact what a guy wears says a lot about him as well.  The clothes we choose to wear gives the person information about us and the image we wish to project.

To look sharp, think about the characteristics of a knife.  It is narrow from one angle, but strong and sharp from another.  It is also smooth and sleek.  Simple.

Clean lines and simple colors project power and confidence.  Color coordination is key.  If you don’t match, it appears that you don’t know what you are doing.  Don’t be tacky by matching your green shirt to your green shoes and your green hair.  There is a huge difference between matching and going overboard.  Make it look effortless, not high maintenance.  You don’t want to give people the impression that you’re trying too hard.  Think Tiger Woods in golf, not in his personal life.

Patterns should also match.  For example, don’t wear a horizontally striped shirt with vertically striped pair of pants.  The level of dress should match as well.  Wearing a suit with flip flops would not be appropriate either. If you choose to go with more patterns or design, make sure it’s stylish and stunning, not discombobulated.

Look the part

Similar to how your attire projects a certain aura, how you groom yourself does so as well.  Be neat and clean.  Shower.  Shave.  If you sport a bit of facial hair, clean it up a bit to look tight and fresh.  Ladies make sure the under arms and legs are shaved too.  Style your hair.  Avoid hairstyles where it’s obvious that you put hours into sculpting your hair.  You will come across as though you’re trying too hard.

People who try too hard do not project confidence.  Be easy.  The trick is to look low maintenance, even if there is a lot of maintenance involved behind the scenes.

For the men and women who believe in manicures and pedicures, get your nails done.  Don’t let your nails get to the point where your polish is chipping off.  Take care of your skin for both health and beauty reasons.  Trim your nose hairs.  Men, if you have ear hair, that’s a no no.  There are other areas to groom as well, should the occasion make it necessary.

Hygiene, yes.  Brush and floss your teeth.  Keep them white and clean.  No one likes to look at stained yellow teeth or to smell bad breath while talking to you.  That’s a good way to push people away.

Play the part

Carry yourself with confidence.  Shoulders back, head straight forward.  Walk slowly and with purpose.  Stand straight, sit erect.  Feel the confidence pulsing through your veins.  When you look and act confident, you start to feel confident.

Avoid crossing your arms and legs.  These are defensive positions.  Keep your stance open and wide to project confidence.  Doing so will also invite people to approach you rather than avoid you.

There is a fine line between confidence and aggression.  Try not to keep your fists balled up.  It’s ok to smile.  Here is How to Keep on Smiling.  It is probably a good idea to smile and be positive.  Your confident positioning and dress might detract people who are a bit more shy.  You want to be confident, but approachable.

Most of these tips will apply to both men and women.  Most men and women will be attracted to confidence.  Those people who specifically target insecure individuals could be predators, so watch out.  The trick is to look, feel, and act confidently without appearing snobby, high maintenance, and unapproachable.
